Orthotics are shoe inserts that are custom made to fit you and to treat painful conditions such as flat feet, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot) and neuromas (swollen or thickened nerve in the ball of your foot). At our Murray Hill Podiatry office, Gary B. Feldman, DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) will explain to you that Orthotics are meant to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern, by slightly altering the angles at which your foot hit a walking or running surface. Flat feet occur when the arch on the inside of your feet is flattened, allowing your entire foot to touch the floor when you stand up. A common and usually painless condition, flat feet may occur when the arches don’t develop during childhood. In other cases, flat feet can be caused by an injury or from the simple wear-and-tear stresses of age. Flat feet can also cause problems in your ankles and knees because the condition can force your ankles to turn inward and throws off the alignment of your legs. If you aren’t experiencing any pain, no treatment is usually necessary for flat feet.

Orthotics

In general most foot pain is the result of a faulty relationship between the bones and muscles of the foot. Even the slightest misalignment can result in significant discomfort. Orthotics are intended to correct an abnormal or irregular walking patterns, by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

Orthotics realigns the structures of the foot and leg to prevent bone mal-alignment as well as muscle, tendon, and ligament fatigue. They are often used after surgery to help stop the recurrence of foot deformities. Custom functional foot orthotics are prescription medical devices made from custom molds of your feet. Your Flushing Queens Podiatrist takes into consideration many factors when both acquiring your foot impressions and when writing your personal orthtotic prescription.
